Worried about the solid waste disposal!!!
A group of students from Mohandas College of Engg. (MCET), Nedumangad, Trivandrum, has come up with an innovative and cost-effective treatment method of the solid wastes (both plastic and food wastes), which is the major burden of most of the developing countries of the world. The project entitled “Design & Fabrication of a Cost Effective Combined Food-Plastic Waste Treatment System”, proposes a treatment system which could treat the mixed solid waste (plastic + food) to a value added final product – the Hydrochar. The hydrochar, which is a nanomaterial has numerous applications in the fields of water treatment, energy, CO2 capture etc.
The project has been approved by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for the financial assistance under INNOVATE scheme. The team has also won special prize in the KSCSTE TEKON as part of KTU TECHFEST 2019 jointly organized by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment from 15-17 February 2019 and hosted by Government Engineering College Trichur.
The team members are Ms. Farhana Saleem, Ms. Amrita Das and Mr. Amal M Poduval, final year students of Department of Bio-Technology and Bio-chemical Engineering (BT&BCE), MCET, Nedumangad. The Principal Investigator of the project is Mrs. Shijina S S, Assistant Professor, Department of BT & BCE, MCET, Nedumangad, TVM.
