Dr. P. Jayaprakash started his career as Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering in College of Engineering , Trivandrum and served there and in other Government Engineering Colleges like , Government Engineering College Trichur and Government Engineering College Idukki, Government Engineering College Barton Hill, Trivandrum for about 25 years in various capacities as, Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, Lecturer in Computer Science & Engineering, Assistant Professor, Professor in Electrical Engineering and Principal. He was on deputation and worked as the Professor & Head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, in the University College of Engineering, M,G University for 3 years. He has also worked as Associate professor and Dean of Computer Science in Troy University, USA (Sharjah Campus) UAE for four years. On deputation he has also served as the Programming Officer, in the Finance Department, Government of Kerala. He was the project coordinator of the World Bank aided MHRD project TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) while working as Professor & HOD in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Government Engineering college, Barton Hill, Trivandrum.A graduate in Electrical Engineering from Kerala University, post graduate (M-Tech) in Computer Science from Cochin University of Science & Technology, he took his Ph.D in Computer Science from Cochin University of Science & Technology in the area of Knowledge based GIS. He has guided many projects in the area of computer Science and Electrical Engineering and has many papers in his credit. Attended many national and International training programmes and got training in various laboratories and research centres in the Electrical and Electromagnetic Engineering divisions of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering

 

The department commenced in  2002 offering B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

Further in 2012 M.Tech degree course in Computer Science and Engineering  was started in the department. The department is well supported by the state- of- the-art facility and a team of well qualified and motivated faculty. The department is located on it’s own independent CS/IT block in the campus with pleasant setting of a serene atmosphere. Apart from extending the regular training to the students within the frame work of the University curriculum, special emphasis is given to further value addition by imparting  training to the students on emerging areas that cater to varying needs of the industry and other organizations.

 The department provides and supports high quality education and training to encourage independent thinking and initiatives in students. A close rapport is maintained with researchers in the field of Computer Science & Information Technology in other Universities within the country and abroad. Faculty and students co-ordinate with investigators in research and industrial organizations to maintain the pace with fast changing trends in IT and related industries.

We offer add-on courses like CISCO Certified Network Training Programmes and Microsoft Certified Training Programmes along with Computer Hardware Training programmes to the students to enhance their skills. Various courses on free and open source Software, Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning  and Deep learning are also offered.

Additional Facilities for M.Tech Course

To address the enhanced technical and academic requirements of the M.Tech students the following additional facilities are provided

  • A separate PG and Research Laboratory is set up to cope up with the enhanced hardware and software requirements. The Systems in the laboratory are installed with the advanced simulation and training packages. The laboratory is extended to the PG students even after the normal working hours of the college.
  • The department has signed an MoU with C-DAC (T) to enable the PG students to do their thesis project in association with the technical expertise and support of the research organization.
  • National conferences are organized by the department in a regular manner to help the PG students to present their research papers in the conference and subsequently to be published in one of the International Journals which the department will collaborate with.
  • The department library is always updated with the latest requirements of text books on advanced areas on elective subjects for the PG students.
  • Expert lectures by external faculty and researches from other universities and research organizations are organized in a regular manner.

 

Departmental Activities

Membership in Professional Bodies

All teachers of the department are life members of ISTE. Many students of the department are members of student branches of IEEE and ISTE.

Computer Society of India (CSI)

The department owns the Computer Society of India (CSI) student chapter with more than 150 students and teachers as members. The CSI MCET chapter conducts technical workshops and seminars with participation of students and teachers from other institutions at district and state level. It also encourages and supports the MCET students to participate in programmes like paper presentations, conferences and workshops conducted at State and National levels.

Association of Computer Engineering Students (ACES)

The Association of Computer Engineering Students (ACES) is a forum of students with the coordination of the faculty of the department that thrives towards total personality and soft skill development of students. ACES is actively involved in conducting invited talks, seminars and workshops and other co-curricular activities for students like paper presentation contests and quiz competitions within the institution.

FOSS CELL@MCET (Free and Open Source Software MCET Chapter)

The MCET chapter of FOSS Cell is formed with Prof. Prathibha S Nair as the Faculty Co-ordinator and Mr. Jithin Mohan (S6 CSE) as the Student Co-ordinator with the  supported by ICFOSS with the aim to provide promotional services of FOSS in our institution following the guidelines in carrying out the vision of ICFOSS, to encourage and promote the use of Free and Open Source Software and related areas such as Open Hardware amongst the students and teachers of this institution for every possible kind of use.

The FOSS CELL@MCET shall carry this out through associating with ICFOSS and it’s programmes, as well as with other FOSS community, industry and research organizations, and taking up programmes including training and capacity building, student projects, lectures & seminars, conferences and exhibitions, by participating at the institutional level as well as inter-institutional, state, national and international levels. The student ambassadors will support this mission.

About the Programme

Community Outreach programme organised by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Mohandas College of Engineering & Technology aims at empowering the community especially rural community with the latest developments in technologies especially ICT by ensuring their partnership with Technical Institutions like MCET, benefiting the community as whole and enabling the teachers to serve the community in a better way as commitment to the society as well as the institution to satisfythe requirements as part of theit’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Being an Educational Institution we concentrate on empowering the teachers at the high School and Higher Secondary levels by imparting quality training on IT related areas and prepare them to handle the subjects in a way to imbibe ICT skills in students which has become the need of the hour. The programme is extended to the student community as well.

Our Outreach activities also promote the digital awareness among common man by contributing towards “Digital Empowerment of Citizens”. We support educating citizens on functional Digital Literacy, Cyber Security, Cyber Hygiene and ensure better utilization of Digital Infrastructure in a better and non-profitable way so that people get benefit out of the latest development in Information Communication Technology (ICT).

We started the programme in the year 2016 and are continuing with the mission, because of the resounding success and positive feedback that we have received. As part of community Outreach programme we have already conducted more than five workshops for the students from reputed schools in Thiruvananthapuram.

CETTA (Community Empowerment Through Technological Advancement)

CETTA (Community Empowerment Through Technological Advancement), a non profit community outreach programme of MCET is a new venture started by the department in the year 2016. CETTA aims at empowering the community, especially the rural community with the latest developments in technologies by ensuring their partnership with MCET. This benefits the community as a whole, enabling the institution and the teachers of MCET to serve the community in a better way as a commitment  to the society and as part of it’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

AS part of CETTA the department has already organized many programs to the teachers and students of High schools and Higher Secondary schools. The programmes are mainly on imparting high quality training on IT related areas to equip the teachers with advanced ICT skills and promote digital awareness among common man by contributing towards “ Digital Empowerment of Citizens”.

MoU with C-DAC (T)

The department hasan MoU with C-DAC (T) – Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Thiruvananthapuram, which formally express the mutual aspiration of MCET and C-DAC to associate in Software Technologies, CloudComputing, IoT ( Internet of Things), GIS Technology, Knowledge Management initiatives, Collaborative teaching, Research and Development, Collaboration in R&D projects, support for setting up of advanced facilities in advanced areas asper the needs of the department, organizing joint conferences, joint projects, training programmes for teachers and students  and support for student projects.

CISCO Networking Academy

The CISCO Networking Academy programme provides skills to students to work worldwide in network and IT fields. MCET Signed an agreement with CISCO and started the Academy in the year 2008. We have a full-fledged Lab with 14 CISCO Routers, 14 CISCO Switches, Wireless Access points, structured cabling system, testing tools, simulators etc. We have five CISCO certified instructors who are qualified to impart industry certified training. Training is given to 60 students every year which increases their employability in the networking industry.

National Conferences

National Conferences on advanced areas of Computer Science & Information Technology are organized periodically (every year) by the department for bringing together academicians, researchers, and industry personals to share their research findings and innovations. This will help the teachers and students in acquiring knowledge  in the latest developments in specified areas of their research interest. RACEIT’16, TECHSYNOD’16and PRABANDH’17  are the three National Conferences organized and conducted by the CS department during 2016-17.

TECHSYNOD’16 –CONFERENCE REPORT

The 3rd National conference on Recent trends in Computer science and Engineering and Sustainability in Civil Engineering was held for 3 days from 19thto 21st December 2016, organized by Mohandas college of Engineering & Technology Anad, Trivandrum. There were keynote lectures of distinguished personalities from various fields of Computer Science & Engineering. Delegates from educational institutions and industries in and around Kerala participated in the conference and also for the Pre-conference workshop.

DAY 1: 19-12-2016

The day began with the interesting session on Cloud Computing byProf Chandrashekaran K, from NIT Suratkal, in the forenoon session. Sir looked in to the details of the first wave and second wave of Cloud Computing. The first wave provided the computing services to the end users and the second wave was powered by an expansion of analytics, such as real-time insights and the Internet of Things and Big Data.The talk was very much informative and interactive for all the participants.

Afternoon session was on Data analytics handled by DrJaison Paul from Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, Kochi. He has done his Masters in Information Systems from RMIT University, Melbourne,Australia and received PhD in Super computing from Australian National University, Canberra. The workshop gave an insight in to the data problem that we are facing at the moment, its solutions and potentials. It also shed light in to the algorithms that are used to identify patterns from Big Data.

DAY 2: 20-12-2016

The first day of the National Conference, ‘Techsynod’16’, began with the inaugural function, inaugurated bySri.Ramani, Executive Director, CDAC, Trivandrum. In the afternoon session we had a keynote address of Dr. John Jose from IIT, Guwahatti. The lecture was on ‘Role of Interconnection Networks in Large Multicore Systems’. Sir, joined as a member of the faculty communityin CSE Dept, IIT Guwahati in July 2015. His research interest is in computer architecture with a special focus to performance optimization related to on-chip memory and communication aspects of multi/many core processors. He did his doctoral research from IIT Madras under the supervision of Prof. MadhuMutyam. His talk covered the basics of on-chip interconnection networks and then gave an overview of application aware input selection based on the amount of time the packets can be delayed at the source application without increasing the processing time.

For the conference, a total of 24 papers were received from various parts of the state out of which selected 17 papers were presented in the afternoon session on 20-12-16. The main areas were Structural, Geotechnical and Transportation and Environmental and Water Resource Engineering. The chairs for the different sessions were Dr. Sreelekshmi, Professor, Computer Science & Engineering department, College of Engineering,Trivandrumand Prof. Balu John, Information Technology Department, Barton Hill Engineering College, Trivandrum.

The second keynote address was on ‘Internet of Things’ by Prof. V. Anantha Narayanan from IOT Research Lab, Coimbatore Campus, Amrita University. The workshop covered the basics of IoT, its architectures and protocols, various open source hardware and software platforms, use cases of IoT in industrial and home automation etc.

FACULTY  DEVELOPMENT  PROGRAMMES

“PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF PARALLEL COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE”
Organized by Department of Computer Science & Engineering
(7th July to 9th July 2016)
Course Overview

The primary objective of the programme was to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of the architecture and design of unicore as well as multicore  processors.. The advancements in computer architectures in detail starting from pipeline architecture , super scalar processors to the latest multicore  andGPU processors were discussed. The latest  NoC architecture for multicore design  was introduced and the research potential in the emerging NoC architecture and compiler and hardware scheduling algorithms were also discussed. A couple open source computer architecture simulators like EduMIPS64 (MIPS64 pipeline simulator) for pipeline architecture and Booksim2 for NoC architecture were introduced and a hands on session was given for both in the laboratory.

Participation in the FDP

The course was intended to faculty members of Computer Science, IT and ECE branches of AICTE approved Engineering Colleges.

Eventhough the number of participants were limited to 30, the organizers were forced to admit 45 participants from various Engineering colleges through out the state. Faculty members from engineering colleges like Govt. Engineering College, Wayanad, LBS Engineering College , Kasargode,  College of Engineering, Pathanapuram, Muslim Association Engineering College, Venjaramoodu, Mar Baselios College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, Marian Engineering College,  Thiruvananthapuram, John Memorial CSI Institute, VKC College of Engineering, Parippally,  PRS College of Engineering, Paliode, Thiruvananthapuram, LourdeMatha College of Engineering, Kuttichal, Thiruvananthapuram were participated along with the faculty members from  Mohandas College of Engineering and Technology.

All the faculty members attended the programme have been given course material. Participation certificates were also issued to all participants who completed the programme.

Workshop on “Blender”

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering in association with FOSSCELL@MCET and ICFOSS (International Committee on Free and Open Source Software) is organizing a 3 days workshop on “Blender” from 9th – 11th August 2017 at Mohandas College of Engineering & Technology.

The objective of the workshop was to impart a hands on training on “Blender” which is a professional Free and Open Source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. Blender’s features include 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, raster graphics editing, rigging and skinning, fluid and smoke simulation, particle simulation, soft body simulation, sculpting, animating, match moving, camera tracking, rendering, video editing and compositing. It further features an integrated game engine

The audience targeted were students/Faculty members of CSE, CE & ME streams from AICTE approved Engineering Colleges and practicing Engineers from industries.

Workshop on IOT and Embedded systems –Projects (for S5CSE & ECE Students (KTU) for Academic year 2017-2018)

Computer Science & Engineering department of Mohandas College of Engineering &Technology in association with Computer Society of India MCET Chapter  has conducted a days workshop and hands on training on “IOT and Embedded Systems-Projects” from 04th August 2017 to 06th August 2017 ( 3 Days – Friday, Saturday & Sunday) for the fifth semester Computer Science& Engineering  and Electronics & Communication Engineering students. The objective of this workshop is to equip the students with latest trends in technology and use them in designing and developing projects as part of their fifth semester curriculum. Sessions were handled by eminent experts from industry/Research institutions in the respective areas.

The programme covered the following topics:

  3. Embedded O.S Concepts
  4. Embedded C Programming Tips
  5. IOT Basics and threats
  6. IOT sample demos and Case studies

Advanced Computer Training Programme for Teachers of High Schools &  Higher Secondary Schools

The objective of this programme is to groom teachers with the right skills capable of teaching the ICT courses in all streams at high school and Higher Secondary levels so that the students learning these courses as part of their curriculum acquire an extended/additional skill in ICT. We do this by equipping the teachers with a strong foundation on the computer hardware, Computer Network basics with an exposure to the free world of Open Source Software with Linux Operating System along with commonly used applications software like office packages, open office database applications, Graphics and image editing, sound recording, video editing and animation packages with necessary programming IDE’s to learn programming languages like Python, C++ and JAVA.

The programme covers imparting deep knowledge in to various scripting languages like HTML, XML, JSP, PHP including web design with hands on sessions and a live project on JSP at the end. Teachers will also be given awareness and exposure to the usage and application of Internet Technologies for e-learning, e-teaching and for all common purposes as part of “Digital Empowerment of Citizens”

Computer Fundamentals and application – Awareness Programme

This programme is intended for selected students of plus one class especially studying non computer Science subjects like, biology, commerce, humanities etc.

Objective:

To provide complete awareness about the hardware and basic electronic components of different types of computers like desk top, lap top, iPad and smart phones.

To provide complete awareness about the different types of operating systems commonly used in different types of computers and the popularly used application software for day to day applications like word processing, spreadsheets and presentation with hands on practical session.

To provide complete awareness about the usage and application of Internet Technology.

Workshop on “Drupal”

Inauguration of 2days Workshop on “Drupal”was conducted in the CGPC Hall of Mohandas College of Engineering & Technology on 03rd of August 2018. It was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Dr. Sheela S (Principal, MCET) followed by an inaugural address. Dr. P. Jayaprakash (HOD, Department of Computer science and Engineering, MCET) welcomed the Chief Guests and the audience. He also gave a brief idea about FOSSCEL@MCET, its objectives and about the need and benefits of using free software like “Drupal”. A felicitation speech was given by Dr B Sivasubramonian, HOD – ME Department. Mr. JithinMohan (Student Coordinator, Fosscell@mcet, Dept. of CSE, MCET) extended the vote of thanks.

Workshop on “Drupal” was for 2 days on the 3rd and 4th August , 2018.The workshop was conducted as hands on training at the network lab of CSE department. We were too lucky to get Mr. Abhiram and Mr. Kiran, two well experienced persons from AVS technologies as the trainers for the workshop. The 32 participants were all engineering students from different semesters and branches of engineering.They gave a very positive feedback about the programme.

Hardware Maintenance Centre

The department is equipped with a full-fledged hardware maintenance centre to cope-up with the  repair and maintenance of all computer related hardware equipments including printers ,LCD projectors, Networking equipments like Switches, Hubs, Routers etc. A hardware Engineer is in charge of this centre. Students are also given hands-on training in this centre.

Department Library

An independent Department Library catering to the academic requirements of B.Tech and M.Tech students is functioning in the department. A total of around 1500 titles and volumes are available covering the books on add-on courses and specialized electives for M.Tech course.

Seminar Hall

The seminar hall of the department is equipped with facilities for conducting video lectures, technical presentations and student seminars. A conference hall is also provided for conducting department meetings and meetings with parents, guests etc.

Documentation Centre

A full-fledged documentation centre is functioning in the department. The facilities include heavy duty high speed laser printers, photo copiers and color laser printers which cater to the data processing and documentation requirements of all the teachers and students of the college.
