The information revolution, which began in the late 20th century, continues to gather pace, driven by spectacular advances in electronics, computing and communications. Electronics-based products play a vital role in our daily lives, from the sophisticated diagnostic equipment used in a modern hospital to state-of-the-art fiber optic communications. Computer technology, telecommunications and consumer electronics are rapidly evolving and so expertise in these fields is in great demand. This branch of engineering has started functioning here ever since this institution came into existence and plays an active part in this fast moving world, by way of training the undergraduate students with the state-of-the-art electronics and computer systems and providing them facilities for working at the cutting edge of technology. Beside, the department is concentrated upon in elaborating the knowledge base of students by exposing them to various laboratories equipped with modern equipment and materials to keep them abreast of the current developments in this core area. Teaching is also classified as excellent and this commitment to teaching means that we base the courses both fundamental or the research topics including the cutting edge technologies with sound understanding of the theoretical and practical approaches which is vital in a field that advances practical approaches which is vital in a field that advances so fast. Apart from the Conventional applications, the field has widened its application base and brought in its ambit the areas like image processing, embedded technology, nano technology, neural network etc. This is achieved by offering a wide range of elective courses right from the fifth semester. The well-qualified and highly motivated staff of this department together with the ambiance helps the students acquire necessary theoretical and practical knowledge in this promising area of engineering.

PRINCIPAL AND HOD – ECE
Dr. R. Ibrahimkutty started career as a Lecturer in department of Electrical Engineering in Regional Engineering College, Calicut. He subsequently joined College of Engineering Trivandrum and served there for 20 years in various levels of Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Professor, Dean (UG), Dean (PG) and Principal. Thereafter he served as the professor and HOD of Electronics & Communication Department and then as the Principal in Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam. A Postgraduate from College of Engineering Trivandrum and a PhD from IIT Kharagpur, he has guided many projects and was an active coordinator of IMPACT project in College of Engineering Trivandrum. He is known for his expertise in the field of microwave engineering and has many papers to his credit.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE
The department always keeps abreast with the latest technological developments by the following activities:-
The SPECTRA is an association of students with the purpose of making the students industry ready as they pass out. Eminent scientists and technocrats from the industry are invited to give talks. Study tours, lectures and industrial visits are organized regularly. An “Electronics Activity Club” was started for awakening the talents and also for promoting projects.
The Association activities of SPECTRA for the academic year 2015 was inaugurated by Mr. Sasi P. Meethal , Associate Director, C-DAC on 4th September 2015, 10:30 AM at Mini Seminar Hall, Civil Block, MCET. The welcome speech was delivered by Prof.Ajith Chandran M.C, Associate Professor, Department of ECE, MCET. The Presidential address was given by Dr.Ashalatha Thampuran, Director, MCET followed by the felicitation speech by Dr. S. Sheela, Principal, MCET. Mr. Azad Shahul Hameed. (Joint Secretary, SPECTRA) delivered the vote of thanks. Mr. Sasi P. Meethal also gave a talk on “Employability and Future Trends in Electronics” which provided a motivation for the students to take role as entrepreneurs, researchers and engineers . Certificates were issued for students who topped in Circuit debugging and quiz competition organised as part of SPECTRA 15. The Chief Guest was also presented a memento by Dr.AshalathaThampuran.
The inauguration of the electronics association “SPECTRA 2012” for year 2011-2012, took place on 26/7/2012. The chief guest of the function was Mr.Rominous Valsalam, associate director CDAC
The inauguration of the Electronics Association of the college “SPECTRA” for the year 2011 by Mr.Joy Chairman of KSEB. The association conducted talks on various technical topics for the students by inviting eminent persons from industries like C-DAC,ISRO,C-DIT and Technopark. The department also arranged various industrial visits.
The inauguration of took place on 22 Sep. 2010 at the college auditorium. The chief guest for the function was Mr .John .P .Zachariah, Asst. Director VSSC. A news letter was published for the ECE Dept. activities
The inauguration for the year 2009-10 took place on 13th August 2007 at college auditorium. The chief guest for the function was Dr.Apren.T.J , Head of RF system ISRO.
The inauguration for the year took place on 07/011/08 and was done by Dr.Sreelal S Pillai,VSSC. He delivered a keynote address on MEMS.
Spectra activities for the year 2007 were inaugurated by Dr.Ashalatha Thampuran.Spectra released the annual news letter which was presented to Prof.Jayarajan, HOD, ECE Dept. As a part of Association activities SPECTRA arranged a mini project exhibition.
A training program was organized with the help of the Indian Society for Technical Education. The training provided an opportunity for teachers to familiarize themselves with modern engineering practices including the latest technological advances adopted by industry keeping in view the national needs and priorities and relevant technologies.
A two week workshop in association with IIT Kharagpur was organized in June 2013. The members of the faculty attended live lectures, tutorials and lab sessions on ‘ANALOG ELECTRONICS’ delivered by faculty of IIT Kharagpur. The lecture transmission and live interaction took place in distance mode using the AVIEW technology through internet, at selected remote centers across the country. This initiative is part of the ‘National Mission on Education through ICT’, which is supported by MHRD. The workshop benefited faculty colleagues who are teaching Analog Electronics and/or related subjects at the undergraduate or the postgraduate level.
