Downstream processing refers to the recovery and purification of biosynthetic products from natural sources such as animal or plant tissue or fermentation broth, including the recycling of salvageable components and the proper treatment and disposal of waste. It is an essential step in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, antibodies, vaccine, industrial enzymes etc. Downstream processing is really helpful for the students to understand the downstream processing steps such as product isolation, purification and polishing.

Experiments in lab include sedimentation, protein precipitation by salting out, organic solvent medium precipitation of protein from solution, ultrasonication, determination of isoelectric point of protein, circular chromatography, ascending chromatography, floculation, enzymatic cell lysis, aqueous two phase extraction, crystallisation, gel filtration chromatography, cross flow filtration batch operation. The lab is equipped with equipments such as electrophoresis unit, ultrasonicator, deadend filtration unit, spectrophotometer, centrifuge, refrigerated centrifuge, cross flow filtration unit, electronic balance, vortex shaker, autoclave, distillation unit and refrigerator.
